  • Support the local economy by buying locally produced goods. Eat in local restaurants, drink the local tipple and explore the local souvenirs. You’ll have a more authentic holiday experience while backing local businesses.

  • Try the local bus service or even do some walking. You’ll see more of your holiday destination and help cut down emissions, too.
  • Be sensitive and ask permission before taking photographs of people. Some may not want their photo taken; others may want a tip. And cover up when entering holy places.

  • You may think that by giving pens and sweets to small children you are doing them a favour but this only encourages begging and the children may not always benefit from the gifts. Some children find it more lucrative to skip school to beg from tourists.

  • Have a go at bartering for that souvenir; it can be great fun. But remember not to drive too hard a bargain; a few pence saved by you may mean a great deal more to the vendor.
  • Please don’t have your photograph taken with a captive animal or give money to unregulated animal attractions such as bear dancing or snake charming. Many of these animals live miserable lives and supporting them only ensures these practices continue.

  • Child sex tourism is a criminal offence in all destinations and may be prosecuted back in the UK. If you would like to report an incident, UK travellers can contact Crimestoppers.
